City University of Hong Kong Enters Semi-Final at the Men’s Group Event of the 17th All China University Tennis Game
(Hong Kong, 3rd August, 2012) When the world’s focus is on the London Olympic, Aziz Khan, representative of the City University of Hong Kong’s tennis team fought hard to enter the semi-final round of the Men’s Category B (Highest level of University Competition in China) event of the 17th all China University Tennis Games. After rounds and rounds of keen competition, the City U Men’s team achieved the best ever result accomplished by any Hong Kong’s university team, finishing as the semi-finalist of the tournament.
With over five hundred tennis players, which includes even players from the China National tennis team, this tournament is considered to have the highest standard among all college level tennis competitions in China, and thus it has attracted 143 teams from universities all over China to compete at Kunming, the tournament venue.
Aziz Khan, the key player of the City U team, grew up in a family with rich history and background closely related to the Hong Kong national level sports development, says, “The practice and physical training given by my coach, Peter Wu, and the Hong Kong Tennis Association have definitely helped me to perform at another level because once I get used to train under hot and humid environment in Hong Kong, the cool and comfort, also dry weather in Kunming then became a very nice condition for me to compete.?
He adds, “I strongly believe my racquet and its setup are keys to my success in this Game. Young players like me often overlook the importance of finding a right racquet and setup that allows me to play very well in a competition. A racquet is actually more than just a piece of equipment, but is an extension of one’s confidence. Even the world’s best players like Federer, Djokovic, Nadal, Li Na, who already got the best tennis skills in the world, still put a great deal of emphasis and attentions on their racquet specifications, such as weight, swing-weight, tension, to ensure it performs and responses in ways as expected during competitions. I am advised to be serious of every part of my racquet when I consulted Dennis Yeung before the Game. He advised me to switch to a new racquet, and then we run through rounds of testing and experiments to find my best racquet configuration in terms of weight, balance, swing-weight, handle shape, string, and string tension. You can’t imagine that these fine adjustments and modifications have created such a big impact on my Game. Now I’m playing better with more confidence than before.? Photo 2- The Racquet Diagnostic Machine indicates that Aziz’s Donnay Pro One 97 has a static weight of 355 gram, swing-weight of 327 kgcm2 , and balance point at 32 cm location.
Dennis Yeung then adds, “There are basically four stages in our racquet customization service that we did for Aziz, which are: 1. Get to know Aziz’s playing style, his strength and the area he wants to improve. It is also very important for us to know if he has any injury record. 2. Get to know Aziz’s current racquet, its specifications, how well it performs and matches with Aziz’s playing style. And any areas that he wants the racquet to perform better, e.g. with more power, better stability. 3. We recommeded four different racquets for him to playtest, in which we also tested three sets of different stringing tensions to let him experience the differences. 4. Once he selected his preferred racquet, string, and stringing tension, we then started the fine tuning process, which included fine adjustment in weight, swing-weight, balance point, handle shape and size, and of course another several rounds of testing to come with a hand-crafted racquet finally that truly fits Aziz’s requirements.
Photo 3- Racquet handles before modification. We need to remove the whole handle cover and replace it with a one that fits natural and good to Aziz’s palm.
Photo 4- Racquet handles after modification. A new handle cover with a different shape is applied on the handle. We also re-grip the replacement grip in clockwise way (left-handed way) to create a contour that fits better to Aziz because he is a left hander.
Aziz knows that there is still a very long way to go for him to become a national tennis player, and he needs to keep pushing his standard and challenging himself to bring his game and skills to another level, but he is ready for it, he is looking forward to train harder.
Aziz Khan and Dennis Yeung welcome media interview.
