MTR・s new safety and courtesy icons have been entrusted with a new mission: to remind passengers riding on escalators to :Hold the handrail and stand still.;

Bringing alive the Chinese characters for the safety messages, the icons will be spreading the important advice through posters and stickers at stations and on escalators during the MTR Corporation・s latest Escalator Safety Campaign launched today (16 July 2012).

The campaign is timely as 474 accidents on escalators have been recorded in the first six months of 2012, an increase of 21.5 per cent compared to the same period last year.

:The majority of escalator accidents, some 60 per cent involve senior citizens and children. In many cases elderly passengers reported that they lost balance or misjudged their footing, while most children seemed to be getting their foot or toe jammed in the escalator step edge,: said Mr Adi Lau, Chief of Operating of the MTR Corporation. :Therefore, we are placing special emphasis on delivering our escalator safety messages to these groups of passengers during this campaign to remind them to hold the handrail, stand still and keep away from the edge. Meanwhile, passengers are encouraged to use lifts while travelling with bulky luggage.;

The campaign will run until 10 August 2012. During that time, the escalator safety messages will be reinforced by 130 Safety Ambassadors dressed in sharp red t-shirts. The Safety Ambassadors will be deployed at 50 selected stations to offer verbal advice and remind passengers on escalator safety. Among them, 10 are Elderly Ambassadors who are best placed to identify the needs of the elderly. They will render their assistance and advice to their fellow senior citizens.

Two mascots will also appear in different stations with the Safety Ambassadors to promote the message that simple precautions make for a safe journey when it comes to riding on an escalator.
